Finding a Breeder That Fits Your Needs

Once you've narrowed down your potential list of breeds to one or two, it's time to search for a breeder. Choosing the right breeder is one of the most important decisions you'll make when investing in a new puppy. Don't be afraid to ask questions and gather as much information as possible before making your final decision.
Questions Every Buyer Should Ask
A reputable breeder should be open, transparent, and willing to discuss every aspect of their breeding program. Consider asking the following questions:
• Certifications and Testing: What certifications are used to monitor performance and health traits within the breeding program?
• Health Guarantees: Do they provide a written guarantee covering health and customer satisfaction?
• Breeding Standards: What criteria determine which sires and dams are selected for breeding?
• Training Support: Is there an opportunity for training support after your purchase to help you achieve your goals?
• Performance Traits: Do they breed for specific traits suited for field trials, hunt tests, confirmation, or other structured events?
• References: Will they provide references from previous customers they have worked with?
• Puppy Selection: What is their puppy selection process and how are puppies matched with owners?
• Early Development: How are puppies acclimated and at what age are they allowed to go to their new homes?
• Parent Evaluation: Can you see the sire, dam, or other related dogs perform before making your decision?
• Registration & Breeding Rights: Will the puppy be registered, and are neuter, spay, or future breeding options available?
Do Your Homework
You'll want to spend time researching breeders and, whenever possible, spend time around some of their dogs. Observing a breeder's dogs can tell you a great deal about temperament, trainability, health, and overall quality.
A breeder that matches your hunting needs is just as important as selecting the right breed. Taking the time to evaluate breeders carefully can help ensure a successful partnership and many years of enjoyment with your new dog.
